TemplateMonster Website DNS Problem – Latest Updates

Ok, we have some news here. And it really seems like this whole DNS thing is almost fixed now – at least we really hope so. Plus we do have a comment from our CEO Mr. David Braun. Here’s what he said about the current situation:

“Of course we have a team of system administrators and network engineers. The problem does not appear to be on our end. It seems to be a DNS issue and our current provider – which is EasyDNS.com – does not accept that fact. We’ve switched to another provider just several minutes ago. It will take a couple of hours for it to be propagated for most users. If this will resolve the problem – then it will be obvious that it was the EasyDNS’ issue. Please continue to inform us about the status, especially people who already had problems.”

Well, you’ve heard the man – we’re taking actions and hopefully everything is going to be over in a couple of hours. However please keep informing us if you still have this problem. Thanks.

UPDATE (AUG 26 2009): After having investigated the issue deeply we found that the problem described above was in no way caused by EasyDNS.com’s services (it was caused by one of our hosting providers instead). In fact, we would like to thank EasyDNS.com staff and management for their prompt and professional assistance on this issue. We kindly ask them to accept our apologies.

I can confirm THIS ISSUE WAS from your hosting provider and not all of us or you,
We offer dedicated servers and have encountered this issue in the past, You made the the right choice to Switch IHSP in this case.

We see the dramatic increase of traffic to the site after switching the DNS. Looks like many people could finally get an access to the website. Please post here any problems you experience. Thank you very much for your assistance.

I am asking internally for all information about this issue. In the meantime, I have to make a comment that this type of error:

“(either a “404 error” or the error message saying “This IP is being shared among many domains. To view the domain you are looking for, simply enter the domain name in the location bar of your web browser.”).”

Is not indicative of a DNS problem (i.e. failure of DNS resolution) but it is something that comes from the web server itself, usually a name based virtual server hosting multiple domains on a single IP that receives a request that is either missing the HTTP_HOST header or the hostname in that header is not configured as a VirtualAlias on the destination webserver.

I would be happy to discuss the details of what happened with David Braun. If we screwed up, we’ll take ownership of that. I just want to figure out what happened.

      Hello,

From the looks of things, it would appear that this issue is due to the configuration of your domain within your easyDNS settings, more specifically, the IP addresses you have set for your A record.

Currently, you have your domain resolving to four IP addresses upon our nameservers:

      4.71.246.78
      4.71.246.80
      69.65.10.131
      69.65.10.132

…while your own nameservers are resolving your domain to only two IP addresses:

      4.71.246.91
      4.71.246.97

The servers located at the IP addresses “69.65.10.131″ and “69.65.10.132″ appear to be misconfigured, and the source of this issue.

Unfortunately, the use of round-robin A records (where you have multiple IP addresses for one A record) can result in sporadic downtime should one of the servers at one of the listed IP addresses not resolve. As such, this can be somewhat confusing to troubleshoot.

Should you decide to point your domain to our nameservers again in the future, please ensure that those IP addresses (“69.65.10.131″ and “69.65.10.132″) are removed.

If you could provide any information as to how you contacted us with regards to this issue and whom you spoke with, it would be greatly appreciated.

      Kind regards,
      Evan @ easyDNS Support.

2Jack. We stopped receiving complains during the last 12 hours. If you still have it it might be a DNS cache issue on your ISP. Please send me your ip address to david.braun@gmail.com and we will take care about that.

I should apologize for saying it was EasyDns’ fault :( .
Our investigation showed that the problem caused by one of our hosting providers. Mr.Jeftovic please accept my apologies.
