In our previous blog series about free Tumblr themes we’ve already found out what Tumblr actually is and what it does. That it is quite flexible, powerful, and most importantly simple to work with blog platform which can be used to put categorized types of fully-variable information in a blog format. Perhaps today you expected that TemplateMonster will launch some promo, or will unveil some new templates that you’re used to. With all due respect to all that, today we’d like you to stop for a minute and think about things that are more than just templates, more than a business and more than the money. You all have heard about the devastating 8,9-mangitude earthquake and a tsunami in Japan, and we’re pretty sure you know things out there in Japan are still pretty messed up even today, several days after the disaster.
At some point we at TemplateMonster began to realize that the community around us is big enough to actually make a difference. And even though the reason that made us think about it is very sad, we are still very much proud to be a part of a community making the world a better and a kinder place for living.
Today we are announcing the start of our donations campaign aimed at helping the victims of the disaster in Japan and the families that lost their homes. There are two parts of this campaign.
- TemplateMonster will donate $1 from every sale we make during a period starting today and until March 22nd 2011.
- In addition to that, every TemplateMonster customer will be able to donate another $5 while buying any of our products. On a shopping cart page there is an “Add to order” button that you have to click in order to donate $5. And after that we will charge the template price plus the $5 donation.
On March 22nd we will transfer the amount we’ll have collected by that time to the Japan Earthquake And Tsunami Relief Fund on GlobalGiving.com (GlobalGiving.com is a famous worldwide donations and fundraising medium – that in turn will transfer the funds to the proper organizations in Japan. Of course, we will publish a detailed report about how GlobalGiving.com does all that on our blog, and on our social network pages.
If you feel donating via TemplateMonster is not the most convenient way for you, or if you do want to donate but don’t want to make a template purchase for that, we strongly encourage you to make your donation through alternate ways – for example directly through GlobalGiving.com where you can choose the amount you want to donate. Plus, there are dozens of other projects accepting donations for Japan – whichever way is more convenient for you, luckily making a difference is a matter of several minutes these days.
To make it all as transparent as it can be, we’re adding a counter of the donations you’ve made in the header of all TemplateMonster pages. The amount collected is being displayed there, in real time. On that counter we display the combined amount consisting of the $1 donations from each template purchase and the $5 donations that our customers make.

As you might be aware of, Joomla has released a new version of its popular content management software – this dynamic portal engine has been finally advanced to Joomla 1.6, on January 11th 2011. From the official Joomla 1.6 release announcement the company has unveiled the range of new functions and features the new version delivers to designers, developers, admins and webmasters, as well as about manifold style improvements Joomla has undergone.
So what’s new in Joomla 1.6?
- new admin, template choices: Joomla 1.6 offers a whole new look at the Administrator Interface with some new templates that extend the Joomla! system;
- template styles: Joomla 1.6 offers a whole new world of versatility by allowing webmasters to create template styles. Basically, you can easily clone your template to apply custom changes or edits to it, and then assign it to specific menu items to create unique pages;

- codemirror editor: finally, there’s a color-coded editor for easier HTML and CSS editing in Joomla;
- media manager improvements: the Flash-based media uploader brings the ability for users to upload multiple files at one time. You can also upload multiple images at once to the Media Manager.
- SEO features: meta-keywords and meta-descriptions can be assigned to articles, categories, and menu items, and you can easily add a site name to the HTML page title;
- new package installation capability: developers can now pack their components allowing users to install one file and include multiple extensions all at the same time;
- easily included language capabilities: with Joomla 1.6′s new language structure, developers are allowed to include additional language packages right with their extensions;
- integrated ACL capability: the development team has made it very easy to include advanced ACL features inside of any 3rd party component. With just a few code changes your component can allow your users to take advantage of the revolutionary ACL structure for their users;
- upgraded system requirements: the new operating requirements for Joomla 1.6 (particularly PHP 5.2) offers developers a great advantage by allowing them to take advantage of object-oriented programming and functionality;
- nested categories: with infinite layers of categories, creating a representation of your site map in Joomla! is a breeze;
- easy extension updates: you can easily update those extensions from within Joomla, without visiting dozens of extension developer’s websites, in Joomla 1.6;
- new plugin format: with the release of Joomla 1.6, plugins now have the same common structure as components and modules;
- consistent component programming: Joomla 1.6 provides a new and cohesive method for building components;

Guidelines in upgrading your Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 1.6
This one starts with a news that’s sort of a bad news. We’ve decided to stop a Facebook feedback promo a couple of days earlier than planned, because of a substantial amount of spam messages from India and comments from Russian guys informing people on how they can steal stuff and commit crimes. It’s a shame that such a great discussion was ruined by a bunch of kids who didn’t have any better things to do.

With the new major upgrades being introduced to Facebook pages, a new design gives us better ways to share interests and activities. Sort of. Even though this new update is just one day old, there’s been a lot of controversy around it already. What we’ll try to analyze is how this update will affect the custom FBML pages we all love so much, along with what it will bring to businesses marketing themselves on Facebook in general.
First of all, to all of those who are against this update – you have to give Facebook a credit. For sure the guys have made the entire profile a more compelling visual experience and found some perfect facilities to keep the activity on the web page. The content field is now more visible and it has become much more convenient to use and navigate around. Plus, it is now possible to feature photos of page’s most recent experiences at the top of the wall. As for the navigation, it has been moved to the sidebar – so the navigation bar now resides on the left-hand side of the page. We cannot tell that’s a good move (since before it was highly comfortable and easy to jump to different pages using the tabs in a header), however that space is available for the main area content, including your FBML pages.
So what do we have? Here’s a couple of updates we consider to be the most important:
- the navigation tabs now reside on the left-hand side of the page, under the profile image;
- more visible content field;
- line for profile images at the top of the wall page;
- wall takes center stage;
We also want to officially inform you that all of our Facebook templates launched a couple of days before are fully compatible with the new changes Facebook fan pages undergone. Moreover, upon implementing our designs with the new Facebook pages they will become more vivid than they were before, because they’re higher in a browser space.
