Here are several technical recommendations for you considering how to use our WordPress themes for earlier versions of WordPress. The thing is that our themes are designed for WordPress 2.1 and if you want to use them for the older WordPress 2.0.x version here are several suggestions for you:
get_links_list() function has been changed to wp_list_bookmarks()
wp_list_bookmarks() is used for the links output from the bookmarks menu ( displays bookmarks found in the Bookmarks Management screen) and it’s not supported by the previous WP versions. Currently this function works only with Netscape and Mozilla but WP developers promise to make it cross-platform in the very near future.
If you want to convert the 2.1 version to the 2.0.x, you need to follow the instructions below:
1. If you’re not planning to use widgets in this theme you should:
1.1 open sidebar.php file in your folder with the theme
a) change the wp_list_bookmarks() for the get_links_list();
b) replace < ?php wp_list_categories('show_count=1&title_li=0'); ?> with < ?php wp_list_cats('sort_column=name&optioncount=1&hierarchical=0'); ?>
1.2 open header.php in your folder with the theme and delete < ?php language_attributes(); ?>
1.3 open searchform.php in your folder with the theme and delete < ?php the_search_query(); ?>
2. If you’re planning to use widgets in your theme you should:
2.1 open header.php in your folder with the theme and delete < ?php language_attributes(); ?>
2.2 open searchform.php in your folder with the theme and delete < ?php the_search_query(); ?>
2.3 open functions.php file and change the wp_list_bookmarks() for get_links_list();

Attention! The WordPress 2.1.1 version has recently been declared dangerous. The reason for this is that a security breech was created by a hacker. It was also determined that a hacker gained access to modify the download file. Fortunately, only the 2.1.1 was affected by the hacker, and not all of its downloads were corrupted.
Nevertheless, the entire version was announced to be dangerous and a new version, 2.1.2 was released. WordPress 2.1.2 does not differ from the previous version very much. It includes only minor changes and has completely verified files.
So you should upgrade all of your files to 2.1.2 immediately if you downloaded WordPress 2.1.1 within the past 3-4 days.

As a sequel to the last announcement Template Monster again wants to thank the buyers of our WordPress Themes. Last week we shared some of the responses our customers have sent about WordPress Themes that they have bought. We want to make sure to mention some more of these customers and print their comments as well.
Marc Navarro says, “A friend of mine has a small advertising agency. He showed me your templates, and in fact their website is done using TM products. . .I use it for commercial purposes. The reason to use WordPress is because the system is supposed to be much more simple to maintain than flash or html based websites. . . I prefer WordPress. . .in my opinion, it’s better than blogger as it offers more possibilities.â€
Corey G says, “I found your website using a search engine, keywords -website templates. . .I bought your WordPress designs because they are nice and I use them for mostly private purposes. I’ve tried Word Press, and blogger.com for about 4 months. Word Press is my favorite so far.â€
Please remember Template Monster wants customer satisfaction. If you have any problems with your WordPress Theme contact marketing@templatemonster.com for an updated and widget supporting version of your template.

As WordPress continues to gain popularity Template Monster will respond with higher performance, more beautiful templates every month – just for WordPress fans. We asked some of our customers about our WordPress Themes, here is what we heard:
Turgay Guel says, “I’ve known about your templates for two years. . . I bought one for my commercial blog about 1 year ago. . . My favorite systems are WordPress and iWeb for Apple users.â€
Franji Mayes at pkids.org says, “I found your templates by Google search. . . I use it for a nonprofit organization. . .I just started this blog but I have tried WordPress and so we stayed with it. . . The widgets are great, the more the better.â€
John Ward says, “I bought your WordPress Template to use on a website I am doing for a church. . . I have done several blogs for others for the past 2 years. I started a few blogs with Blogger but after I discovered WordPress I plan to use it. . . Widgets are OK for some websites but I have only used it once. It seems to have a future as the selection of widgets grows.â€
Martijn says, “The widgets, they’re very cool! The one reason for me to choose WordPress.â€
Shawn Andrew of Ricercar Holdings says, “I found your template by a link from wordpress. . . I blog for private and commercial use. . . No, haven’t had any problems. I think they are great.â€
Jason Ervin says, “I found your website a couple of years ago through a Google search for web templates. I have designed sites for people, and you guys are the first place I go (and usually only) for templates. 99.9% of the time you have what I am looking for at a good price. I bought the Word Press template because I like word press, but I didn’t want mine to look like all the other blogs out there. I thought the template was fresh, unique, and ‘upbeat’. I have tried other blogs like Geeklog, Drupal, and Blogger, but they were either more than I needed, or not enough. I have no problems with any of your templates.â€
Janece E Moment says, “I am a web designer and for people who can’t afford customized web design services… I pointed them to your website as an economical alternative. Often I would build/customize the templates that they purchased from you. . . I’ve used Blogger, LiveJournal, WordPress, Moveable Type, and
Expression Machine. Between me and my clients, I’ve used and/or implemented
a lot of blogs. My personal favorite is definitely WordPress. . . Nope, zero problems with your WordPress themes. Worked flawlessly. . .Widgets? I think they are great.
G. Broekstra says, “I like the fresh look. . . I’ve used Moveable Type, like it, but I choose WordPress, because of the template system and the widely available plugins. Widgets are rather cool. It can make the blog more alive and interactive.
I used a weather widget (plugin) on my site (with your TM template)
at www.broekstra.net. I used plugins like ‘flickr photoalbum’, ‘Reading Now’.
Template Monster wants to thank each of our customers individually, and we wish each of you every success in whatever your plans for your WordPress projects.

Template Monster is proud to have WordPress Themes among our products. We want to provide the best templates available for this large and growing sector of the web. We recently decided to ask some of our WordPress theme buyers for their opinions about the template they had purchased. The results were fantastic.
We have designed our WordPress Themes for use on the WordPress platform – the most popular blogging available. Each template is designed for maximal technical accuracy and attractiveness. Our WordPress Themes are designed in a wide variety of motifs and color schemes – because bloggers deserve to have a choice for a more exclusive look for their blogs. Bloggers want skins for business, pleasure, hobbies, family and church communications. Employers and schools realize the importance of blogging and they want a blog that feels the way they feel, and the way their readers feel.
Template Monster officers and designers were surprised by the degree of satisfaction that WordPress Themes buyers expressed. A brief questionnaire was sent out to a cross-section of buyers – asking about their experiences with their Template Monster WordPress Theme.
First of all the rate of response was exceptional – we received a majority of the questionnaires answered in full. One very satisfying thing that we found was that there was not one single complaint of any serious problems with any theme that was downloaded. There were many compliments, anecdotes about how the themes were used, and best of all – most of the buyers felt they had made a very good purchase. Some of the buyers gave reasons as to why they chose a certain theme or how they used it – which made for some good reading.
One example of the responses we received came from Christine Rodriguez. “I set up a family recipe repository – - (WordPress theme # 10796). . . I’ve been blogging for four years but this particular site is new . . . I blog for fun.†We asked Christine how she found out about Template Monster – “I googled ‘website templates’ and Template Monster came up.†How did you know Template Monster makes WordPress Themes? – “I didn’t, but I was thrilled to find some.†We asked Christine if she liked her Template Monster WordPress Theme – “I love it. It’s simple, elegant design, and very easy to install.†Take a look at her blog – Christine has a made a good thing better.
Another example is Aspire Youth Ministries (WordPress theme # 10781). Jessica Weiser explained that she had used Template Monster templates before. “I customized the design for our website, but overall the theme was okay.†When you see what Jessica has done with the template you will know why we wanted to show you Aspire’s website.
Template Monster is proud of the way our customers are using their WordPress Themes. If you have a Template Monster WordPress Theme on your blog and want other people to look in on your work/play let us know about it – send us an email with your link (marketing @ templatemonster dot com). We can share the fun!

Our WordPress themes have received an analysis which appeared in a review, “Template Monster Themes†of July 6th, 2006 in WordPress Station. Michael B. (the owner of WordPress Station) made a post on his blog about our free WordPress themes after trying out some of them back in February of 2006.
When we started producing WordPress themes on regular basis we got word to Michael that we would like for him to review the new designs. So he chose one and did the analysis. Michael went on record, he essentially found our WordPress Templates to be limited in its use of CSS and XHTML. He had some nice things to say about our graphics and pricing.
In the WordPress Station article Michael goes on to say that he believes Template Monster will continue to develop WordPress Templates for the changing needs of the WordPress community. Yes, Template Monster has many, many choices for a well designed, good looking WordPress Template, and they provide a great start for blogs that have a specific theme in mind.
And now some answering statements from our Production Team:
One thing I’d suggest to Template Monster is to incorporate the use of the widgets plugin…
1. There are many different plug-ins for WordPress which improve the experience for both bloggers and readers alike. Template Monster does not (and nobody should) guarantee that all users will want even the most popular of them. When starting this product line our aim was to provide a basic product as soon as possible. Which is what we provided. Now with some experience with WordPress templates sales and technical support statistics we will add more features to our themes. We are actively moving to production of three-column themes (as you may know we already provide two-column themes) which will give our clients more options to play with the blocks and structure. The next step will be widgets. As with any product line we must develop, release and incorporate changes into our products that have been tested in both spheres: technical and market demand. This takes time, but getting it right is not just a matter of creativity, it is also a matter of supplying what the market needs. We will accelerate our production in WordPress Templates because the blogosphere is a fastest evolving field in Web.
Now, onto the the move from tables to CSS/XHTML.
2. About CSS: The aim here is to make sure these themes render the same under the major browsers. Using the display property of div tags in CSS is very good for the Mozilla family browsers. As for IE we use float property in CSS instead. Of course there are many different coding methods. We chose this one for its stability, and because our coder team is very familiar with this particular method – so we used what works and tests. The only bad thing about this method is that you will need to edit HTML along with CSS to customize the layout. We believe most of our WordPress customers use the theme as it is, without making changes to it. But we are currently conducting a special survey among our WordPress customers to find what changes are needed, if any.
Not to mention, there’s no h1 tag for the title…
3. As for h1 and h2 tags: In our understanding design is of greater value than SEO. We assume that those who do SEO for their blogs know how to add h1 and h2 tags. Those who don’t do SEO – wouldn’t care about it at all. You will need to add two more CSS styles (line-height and font-size) to add these tags. It’s not a big deal actually, but we are considering adding them to our new themes.
